Liz Dunn (Thora Birch) returns to her boarding school bloodied and in shock. The police are called immediately. Shocked Liz Dunn tells her story to the psychyatrist appointed by the court, Dr. Philippa Horwood (Embeth Davidtz). When she has just recovered a bit, she tells that she and three more students hid inside a war-time bunker. They all wanted to avoid a school excursion to Wales, but they didn't want to spend their holidays with their families. The three other runaways are quite succesful at school, but Liz is the school outcast. She wants the opportunity to make Mike Steel (Desmond Harrington) forget his girlfriend, popular Frances 'Frankie' Almond Smith (Keira Knightley). Geoff Bingham (Laurene Fox), Mike's best friend, will also hide with them in the bunker. The plan is simple: the excursion people will think they are at home on holidays, and the students' parents will think that they are on the excursion. Nerdy Martyn Taylor (Daniel Brocklebank) is supposedly Liz's only friend. He will lock the only gate/exit to the bunker, go out to his family, and three days later he will arrive to unlock the door, and they will all go back to school. This is the story which Liz tells dr Horwood, one in which the plan went according to plan, but the psychiatrist thinks that it's only natural that Liz has blocked out her shocking rememberings about the event, which could have easily cost her her life as well.The interviews go on on later days. Mrs Dunn (Gemma Craven) doesn't think it's necesarry to go on with the questioning but Phillipa insists. Having recovrered her strength, Liz tells the story of how Martyn didn't unlock the door when he was supposed to, so that they have no way out. The four friends tried to smash the door, open it, find another exit, to no avail. They have to wait until Martyn takes pity on them. Liz says that it was all Martyn's revenge, to punish her because she was in love with Mike.However, they haven't got much food or drink, in spite of rationing. Frankie is the first to die. Hunger and thirst caused her a massive heart failure, and she died. The three remaining students cannot do anything else apart from talking among themselves, arguing and being friends again. There comes a moment when the three remaining survivors can't even move. Suddenly, a soft pop and a sssssss is heard. Mike discovers that Geoff had hiden away a can of Coke, and he was about to drink it on his own. In anger, Mike kills Geoff by banging his head onto the floor several times.The questioning gets interrupted once and again, especially by DCS Tom Howard (Steven Waddington) which thinks that Phillipa's conversations with Liz are just a waste of time. Tom interrogates Martyn, whom wants to talk with Liz face-to-face. Martyn asks Liz why she's said what she's said, because now the police suspects him of murder. Liz kills Martin and pushes him away, down to the river. Back at the police station, Phillipa interrogates Liz some more. Phillipa suspects Liz.Liz finally tells dr Horwood what happened: only Mike and Liz were alive, he showed some tenderness to her. At that moment, Liz shows the key to the door: she had had it with her from the beginning. Mike gets mad at her, because he was forced to kill his best friend with his own hands. He threatens her, he shouts, he wants to kill her in a rage, but he falls down the metalic stairs and is killed. Dr Horwood stares to Liz in horror. She was always the "leader of the pack" at school, snobbish, stubborn and conceited, childish and obsessively in love with a boy who won't pay attention to her, and everything was her plan to make Mike realise that he was in love with her. Phillipa tells Liz that she has to come clean to the police.At that moment, Tom Howard arrives, interrupting them once again. Liz pretends to be afraid of Dr Philippa Horwood. Tom tells Liz to stop terrifying Horwood, or she will get suspended and lose her job.Liz comes to her perfect, wealthy life, knowing that she did what she wanted no matter what.
